Reaching easterly through the glassy Atlantic, a sandy stretch of quintessential New England: The Cape. Here, modest saltbox homes and quaint villages are nestled between sand dunes and scrub pines, and gulls follow the lobstermen as they drop their pots at first light. Before the summer season, when the population of Barnstable County swells to two times its size, you can catch a glimpse of a Cape Cod seemingly untouched by time—where things move slowly, and the salty history of this magical place lays bare.

Cape Cod is geographically and culturally unique. Home to fifteen towns comprising one hundred and forty-three villages, it faces four salt seas, has five hundred and eighty-six miles of shoreline, three hundred and six miles of beaches, and encloses two hundred and seventy natural lakes and ponds, all laced together by over fourteen hundred miles of rough macadam road. Like an artful photograph, the tides of time may age the edges of this place, but its spirit endures.
